Baskerville is a classic serif typeface created in the 1750s by John Baskerville from Birmingham, England. John Handy cut the original punches for the design. This font is known as a transitional typeface because it bridges the gap between older serif styles and the modern designs that came later. William Caslon’s earlier work heavily influenced Baskerville’s design.
Baskerville improved letterforms by widening the contrast between thick and thin strokes. He made the shapes sharper and more slender, creating a more elegant appearance. The rounded parts of the letters were repositioned so they aligned closer to the center of the letter’s vertical axis. These refinements created a more sophisticated typeface, making Baskerville a popular choice for books, invitations, and formal designs.
